After Tragedy In Florida- No To Homophobia, No to Racism.

The scenes emerging from Florida are heartbreaking and horrific. 50 people shot dead in an LGBT nightclub. The shootings lasted for three hours in the early morning of Sunday, June 12.

Socialists are utterly opposed to and wholeheartedly condemn this terrible act of hate. We stand in solidarity with the LGBT community in Florida and across the world.

The media are trying to link shooter, Omar Mateen, to ISIS- stating that he had pledged allegiance to the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. But he seems to have acted alone rather than under the direction of ISIS.

The other narrative is that he was ‘self radicalised’ but even his ex-wife stated that he wasn’t interested in the politics of radical Islam. he even played with pledging allegiance to rival Islamist groups who are at war with one another.

His father said that his son was outraged by the sight of two men kissing- making his terrible actions a hate crime fuelled by bigotry towards the LGBT community.

Donald Trump was quick to intervene in the debate trying to stir up hate towards Muslims and repeating his outrageous call for the banning of Muslims from the USA. Yet the right in the USA have been pushing for anti-LGBT legislation and attacking the LGBT community.

These are the very people who are creating the context for more attacks on LGBT people. It is blatant hypocrisy for the US right to attempt to twist a tragedy to their hate filled ends.

That’s why socialists stand 100% in solidarity with the LGBT community while also standing against the tide of bigotry directed against Muslims, brown or black people. In New York 400 people turned out to a rally in solidarity with Florida with placards against all forms of hate.

Donald Trump is set to visit Ireland. We should make it clear that his hard right politics are opposed by the movement here. This will send a clear message to people in the USA that we stand with the oppressed whether LGBT or victims of racism.

Socialists want to fight for the unity of all oppressed people and workers- a movement for a world where hate and bigotry are things of the past.
