Lannigan’s Ball: How Long will FF and FG Partnership Survive?

The Irish political establishment have a major problem. The corruption at the heart of their state is being exposed through numerous ‘commissions of inquiry’. And on the streets, the protest movement is growing by the day. Instead of the large scale mobilisations seen at the height of the water charges movement, there are a host of smaller protests on a variety of issues. The message that ‘people power’ gets results has spread like wildfire.

The Vultures have Landed

Vulture funds have swooped on Ireland with a ruthless determination that has hardly ever been seen in other parts of the world. They are buying up vast swathes of Irish property – and the Fine Gael led government is encouraging them.

The Vultures have Landed

Kieran Allen A vulture fund brings together wealthy investors who pool their money to search for quick profits. Typically they move in two ways. Either they buy up distressed property – houses, apartments or commercial units – whose prices have collapsed after the crash of 2008. Or they buy up the debts. They approach institutions […]

A Space Opening for the Left

General Election 2016 began with a sustained press campaign suggesting that Enda Kenny was a sure thing to be returned as Taoiseach. The FG-Labour government choreographed to the last detail a series of sweetners designed to push up their poll ratings. Their media friends joined in chorus to predict their return. Politics was presented as a spectator sport where punters could identify the favourite to win.

A Space Opening for the Left

Kieran Allen, People Before Profit Director Elections, offers his overview of the 2016 General Election campaign The political establishment, however, did not reckon on the surge of anger that has swept Irish society. THE DEFEAT OF SYRIZA AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE IRISH LEFT

Against the economic terrorism of the EU, people power and workers action is the only way to achieve change.

THE DEFEAT OF SYRIZA AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE IRISH LEFT

The EU has enforced a humiliating surrender on Greece. The Syriza government that was elected to end austerity has been forced to implement it. The meaning of Wolfgang Schauble, the German Finance Minister’s infamous phrase ‘we can’t possibly allow an election to change anything’ is now clear. The scale of the brutality is astounding. To […]

NEITHER LEFT NOR RIGHT?

On May 1st, Eduardo Maura from Podemos spoke at a conference organised by trade unions supporting the Right to Water campaign. He told participants that Podemos in Spain grew because it realised that ‘there was a new political space that was neither on the left side of the board or the right side of the board but at the centre’. His remark drew strong applause from one section of the hall but deadly silence from another. It was a glaring indicator of the different strands that composed the anti-water charges movement.
