Read the newspapers’ reporting on the state elections in Berlin and they are all about the defeat of Merkel (because her stand on refugees) and the rise of the far-right semi-fascist, AfD. In fact the party in first place was the SPD (social democrats) with 38 seats (21%), second was Merkel’s CDU with 31 seats (17.4%); third was Die Linke (The Left) with 27 seats (15.6%); fourth was the Green Party with 27 seats (15.2%); fifth were the AfD with 25 seats (14.2%) . The Pirate Party by the way, which was all the rage a few years ago collapsed completely and won no seats. Obviously 25 seats and 14.2% for a far right racist party that may be on the road to outright fascism is terrible and a serious danger. Nevertheless the actual result is very different from the image presented in the press which makes no mention of the success of the left and feeds the momentum of the racist right – as they did with UKIP in Britain.
