SWP Statement on ongoing Mediterranean migrant deaths #MigrantLivesMatter

Over the last five days, we have seen the tragic deaths of hundreds of migrants in the Mediterranean. In the first incident on April 15, 400 migrants died after their boat capsized. This was followed by a second disaster on the 19th where 700 people have lost their lives, bringing the total number of deaths so far in 2015 to more than 1500. 2014 was a record year for migrant deaths but the first three months of 2015 saw more than ten times the number of deaths compared to the same period in 2014.

It has now been more than one hundred years since the introduction of laws prohibiting the sale and/or possession of illicit drugs in the United States - laws that began with the prohibition of opium in 1914. This authoritarian trend progressed for several decades and even included a failed attempt to criminalise alcohol in the 1920's. It was Nixon, however, who coined the term “war on drugs” as the size and scope of the federal effort to crush drug users increased and saw the implementation of such draconian policies as “no-knock” warrants and “mandatory minimum” sentencing for offenders.
