Galway People Before Profit Alliance have called this action as part of the growing international boycott and protest against RE/MAX. The company is currently involved in selling properties in illegal settlements in the West Bank.
RE/MAX has a branch in Galway’s Eyre Square. The Galway website boasts that: “RE/MAX is the world’s NO.1 Real Estate Company and we at RE/MAX Property Experts proudly fly the RE/MAX flag in Galway. Nobody in the World Sells more Real Estate than RE/MAX”
At the US Presbyterian General Assembly in June 2016 a resolution was passed calling on the global real estate company RE/MAX to stop selling properties in illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Before the assembly was held RE/MAX LLC CEO Dave Liniger issued a letter announcing that the company had:
“recently taken action to ensure that RE/MAX, LLC will no longer receive any income from the sale of Jewish settlement properties in the West Bank.”
However, the company is continuing to allow its Israeli franchise to use the RE/MAX logo and trademark to sell properties in Israeli settlements in violation of international law.
RE/MAX Israel CEO Bernard Raskin subsequently confirmed to Haaretz that they were continuing “business as usual,” and that the Presbyterians’ resolution had “zero impact on anything we are doing. ” RE/MAX Israel currently operates in all of the large settlements and also has an office in Ma’aleh Adumin settlement.
Declaring non-receipt of the income from the sales yet continuing the use of the RE/MAX logo and trademark is an attempt to deny any responsibility. As long as the company allows its Israeli franchise to operate within the RE/MAX network, and the RE/MAX balloon logo flies over illegal settlement homes, it is still implicated in the ongoing human rights abuses.
Says Dette Mc Loughlin of Galway PBPA:
“By holding this demonstration we join the call on the multinational RE/MAX company to stop selling homes in the occupied territories.
RE/MAX LLC must immediately establish policies and guidelines for all RE/MAX agents globally not to sell, rent, or advertise properties built on illegally seized land in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, nor refer clients to agents involved in such illegal properties.
“We encourage people to hold similar demonstrations outside Re/Max offices across Ireland. Also, to join the growing BDS of Israel and firms that profit from Israel’s illegal activities and human rights abuses. Like the anti-apartheid campaign against South Africa, we need to make the BDS of Israel just as strong in order to force change for the Palestinian people.”
