From War to Uncertainty

Jim O’Connell, People Before Profit candidate in Cork South Central, was recently in Athens where he visited Victoria Square, a gathering point for many refugees. He sent us this vivid and moving report.

From War to Uncertainty

The heavy police presence in Victoria Square is backed up by two very large mobile tactical units, converted buses where the armed police take meals and breaks, conduct briefings and store their equipment. On one end of the square a sentry post complete with parasol sunshade looks like something from a West Bank checkpoint. Uniformed […]

Mass protests as general strike hits Greece

Mass protests gathered outside the Greek parliament as the country’s workers mobilised for the first time since Syriza took power in January. Members of key unions engaged in a 24 hour walk out against the terms of Greece’s so called ‘bailout’- in reality an austerity package designed to force Greek workers to pay for banker’s […]

Greece – a different strategy needed to stop austerity

In January this year, when Alexis Tsipras gave his speech following the magnificent Syriza election victory, he said: ‘Greece is turning the page. It is leaving behind austerity and five years of humiliation so that people can live in hope and dignity. We shall end the vicious circle of austerity because the verdict of the people makes the Troika a thing of the past’.

Greece, Popular Unity & the lessons of Chile

Socialists welcome the left split from Syriza and the possibility of a united front of all forces opposed to austerity but within this movement we must debate the question of the left and capitalist State power. Miguel Silva, a comrade from Chile, sent us this report.

Tsipras throws down the gauntlet to the left

Alexis Tsipras has made a remarkable transformation- from a champion of the fight against austerity to witch-hunting the left within Syriza so he can push through more austerity. The strategy of treating the EU as ‘partners’ has led to a humiliating capitulation by the Syriza leadership.

THE DEFEAT OF SYRIZA AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE IRISH LEFT

Against the economic terrorism of the EU, people power and workers action is the only way to achieve change.

THE DEFEAT OF SYRIZA AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE IRISH LEFT

The EU has enforced a humiliating surrender on Greece. The Syriza government that was elected to end austerity has been forced to implement it. The meaning of Wolfgang Schauble, the German Finance Minister’s infamous phrase ‘we can’t possibly allow an election to change anything’ is now clear. The scale of the brutality is astounding. To […]

Getting it in Proportion

Numbers in billions are hard to get your head round. Socialist Worker makes some comparisons:  €1.6 billion – the amount Greece was demanded to pay the Troika on Tuesday 30 June.  €1.6 billion – the increase in the personal fortune of Denis O’Brien last year. €1.6 billion is only one quarter of O’Brien’s total personal […]

Ireland’s Shame, Syriza’s climbdown

To its great shame the Irish Government, and Finance Minister Michael Noonan in particular, have played a disgraceful role in lining up with the IMF and the EU institutions to inflict further suffering on the Greek people. Noonan joined forces with his German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble to intensify pressure on the Syriza government to abandon its commitments and impose even more austerity on its people.
