REPEAL–A Historic Opportunity

At last! After decades of campaigning, years of mass mobilisations, the careful deliberations of the Citizens Assembly and the recommendations of the Oireachtas Committee, we have our chance.

REPEAL–A Historic Opportunity

Now, finally, the people of Ireland and especially the women of Ireland have a historic opportunity to break with the dark past and take a major step towards choice and real equality. But to do this the referendum in the Summer has to be won. Socialist Worker would have preferred a simple vote on Repeal, […]

Abortion – the Arguments

Abortion – the Arguments

“Abortion” is a word surrounded with stigma and shame, and it’s time to change that. We need open factual discussions about abortion; we owe it to every Irish woman denied control over her own reproductive rights. Irish women have abortions; last year 1,017 abortion pills were seized by customs and 3,451 Irish women procured abortions […]

Repeal the 8th – People power to force referendum now!

Repeal the 8th – People power to force referendum now!

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service has said it will provide a free after-care helpline to women in the Republic and Northern Ireland who have bought abortion pills on line.  The agency said that while adverse effects of the abortion pill were unlikely, they were concerned that women might not always seek help when they needed […]

Fianna Fáil- Two Faced

Talk of recovery is everywhere! There are those recent CSO recovery figures, heavily distorted by multinational tax evasion, claiming that the Irish economy grew last year by an astonishing 26%. There’s recovery too for some of those builders and developers who crashed the economy, offloaded their debts to NAMA and are now back in business.

Repeal the 8th – women can’t wait

Amidst the debates on potential government coalitions, emerged the idea that we need social democratic parties – such as the Labour Party – in order to bring about progressive social policy. This is not true. It was Fianna Fáil who brought in the 1947 Health Act which introduced universal health care. Provision of basic services such as these are legislated for only when the need for them becomes dire enough or when people get out on the streets and demand change – such as the protest involving 30,000 pensioners in October 2008 in response to a threat to withdraw medical cards.

Your body, your life, your choice! – Time to repeal the 8th

About ten thousand people took to the streets for the annual March4Choice on Saturday 26th September – it was a brilliant turn out. This reflects the increasing pressure to repeal the 8th amendment. Recent polls have shown that over 80% of people in Ireland want to see a liberalisation of abortion laws. As many as […]

Pressure increases to Repeal the 8th

Following the success of the Marriage Equality referendum, there is a significant sense that the next issue we need to tackle is the question of abortion rights. Young people in Ireland have shown a high level of support for changing the current abortion laws, favouring abortion rights under any circumstance in polls from 2004 onwards. Changes in abortion law would require a referendum in order to remove the 8th Amendment to the constitution, which was inserted in 1983 and equates a woman’s life with that of a foetus.
